Open Gardens afternoon
Parents and carers were invited into school on Monday 8th July to see all the hard work that has been put into our school garden this summer. What a wonderful afternoon! Thank you so much to Chrissy, our parent volunteer who organised the event and for all her hard work and time she has given in creating our amazing garden.
Class 1 trip to Harlow Carr
The children in Class 1 explored Harlow Carr recently as well as taking part in a “Signs of the Seasons”” workshop.
Micro:bit
Classes 2 and 3 had a lovely time today, working together to carry out a survey of the temperatures in the playground. They programmed Micro:bits to use as thermometers then used them to test the different temperatures of man-made and natural surfaces. We found that the man-made materials had, on average, a higher surface temperature. We entered our data into a national BBC playground survey.
Crucial Crew
Years 5&6 across The Federation enjoyed a very informative morning at Crucial Crew on Monday 1st July. The children covered a wide range of subjects about staying safe including drugs, online safety, railway awareness, fire and vaping /smoking. Thank you to North Yorkshire Police and Harrogate College for hosting the event for the first time in 5 years and ensuring we knew where we were going!
Pro Ride
The children had a fantastic session with PRO RIDE in Reception and Year 1, learning how to navigate obstacles on balance bikes!
Science
This morning, Class 2 have been out in the garden with Chrissie preparing their science experiment. We are learning about the required conditions of plants to grow. We planted up some radish and sunflower seeds and are putting them in some different conditions, such as dark, light, wet, warm, cold and dry to test which works best! The children have made their predictions and will now be observing their seeds daily to see which germinate and begin to grow healthily and which don’t.
Also, how fabulous is our school garden looking?! Thank you to Chrissie for all her hard work in there – it is much appreciated by everyone!
Biodiversity Activity
Class 3 explored the biodiversity in our school grounds this week.
First we programmed our Micro:bits so they could be used to collect and store data for both plants and animals. We then explored the school garden and playground and discovered a class average of 65 species of plants and 22 animal species!
Class 1 at Spofforth
In Early Years this half term, the children have considered what they might like to do when they are older. They have spent time learning about different jobs that people do. We have had lots of visitors; a dance teacher, a footballer and a vet. We will also be welcoming a doctor, police officer, florist and air bag maker before the Summer!
Making Biscuits!
Our Class 2 chefs have had a brilliant time making, decorating and taste testing biscuits these last two days! Don’t their biscuits and packaging look fab?!’
Pond Dipping!
Earlier this week Class 1 spent some time in our school garden to do some pond dipping!
We identified which minibeasts were living in the pond and then discussed how we could make the pond a better habitat to encourage a wider of variety of pond life to live there.
