Open Gardens afternoon
Parents and carers were invited into school on Monday 8th July to see all the hard work that has been put into our school garden this summer. What a wonderful afternoon! Thank you so much to Chrissy, our parent volunteer who organised the event and for all her hard work and time she has given in creating our amazing garden.
Micro:bit
Classes 2 and 3 had a lovely time today, working together to carry out a survey of the temperatures in the playground. They programmed Micro:bits to use as thermometers then used them to test the different temperatures of man-made and natural surfaces. We found that the man-made materials had, on average, a higher surface temperature. We entered our data into a national BBC playground survey.
Crucial Crew
Years 5&6 across The Federation enjoyed a very informative morning at Crucial Crew on Monday 1st July. The children covered a wide range of subjects about staying safe including drugs, online safety, railway awareness, fire and vaping /smoking. Thank you to North Yorkshire Police and Harrogate College for hosting the event for the first time in 5 years and ensuring we knew where we were going!
Science
This morning, Class 2 have been out in the garden with Chrissie preparing their science experiment. We are learning about the required conditions of plants to grow. We planted up some radish and sunflower seeds and are putting them in some different conditions, such as dark, light, wet, warm, cold and dry to test which works best! The children have made their predictions and will now be observing their seeds daily to see which germinate and begin to grow healthily and which don’t.
Also, how fabulous is our school garden looking?! Thank you to Chrissie for all her hard work in there – it is much appreciated by everyone!
Biodiversity Activity
Class 3 explored the biodiversity in our school grounds this week.
First we programmed our Micro:bits so they could be used to collect and store data for both plants and animals. We then explored the school garden and playground and discovered a class average of 65 species of plants and 22 animal species!
Making Biscuits!
Our Class 2 chefs have had a brilliant time making, decorating and taste testing biscuits these last two days! Don’t their biscuits and packaging look fab?!’
Pond Dipping!
Earlier this week Class 1 spent some time in our school garden to do some pond dipping!
We identified which minibeasts were living in the pond and then discussed how we could make the pond a better habitat to encourage a wider of variety of pond life to live there.
Years 1&2 Dodgeball Competition
On Tuesday Year 1 and 2 across The Federation, took part in a dodgeball tournament at Ashville College. They were up against several other local schools and played 6 games in total!
Follifoot Sports Day 2024
Thank you to everyone who came and supported the children at Sports Day. The weather remained kind and the children had a fantastic morning competing in track and field events. Thank you to Sporting Influence for their help and to FOFs for refreshments.
Years 5&6 Residential
Pupils in years 5 and 6 from both Follifoot and Spofforth, enjoyed a fantastic residential visit to East Barnby near Whitby. The children enjoyed spending time with their friends across the federation, building confidence and friendships. They had the opportunity to take part in a variety of exciting activities such as beck scrambling, raft building, digital orienteering and exploring the seashore at Runswick Bay. They learnt how to search for fossils on the beach and one group even found a lobster in a rockpool! The children (and adults!) had a great week exploring a beautiful part of the world.
