PE and Sport
Physical Education (PE) and Sport at The Federation of Follifoot & Spofforth CE Primary Schools
Nurturing children’s passions and interests are central to our vision of Love, Learn Thrive. High quality Physical Education and School Sport play a key role in the living out of this vision enabling children to thrive and flourish physically. Children experience a range of individual and team sport contexts learning the many benefits of to physical and emotional health of sport and exercise. Our programme of PE and school sport also creates a wide range of opportunities to learn the values associated with competition including wining and loosing well, fair play, rule of law and team work.

Physical Education (PE) is the curriculum provision made for pupils during the school day. It is based around the National Curriculum requirements and our own learning principles.
School Sport is any physical activity or sporting provision made for pupils outside of curriculum time but via school. This may include activity at; playtime/lunchtime, after school clubs, competitions outside of the school day, links to sports clubs and school teams.
Learning Culture & Principles PE and school sport have a central and key role in supporting the development of our ‘Skills for Life’ (independence, resilience, responsibility and self-belief) ethos. All PE and school sport activity targets developing at least one of these learning skills alongside the specific physical education or health elements .
In Early Years provision is made for children’s Physical Development (PD). Within the area of Physical Development there are two main focus; moving and handling and self-care. High quality physical development centres around a range of play based provision and adult led sessions developing spatial awareness, self-confidence, balance and co-ordination.
Key stage 1
Pupils develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
Pupils are taught to:
•master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities
•participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
•perform dances using simple movement patterns
Key stage 2
Pupils should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
Pupils are taught to:
•use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
•play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
•develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]
•perform dances using a range of movement patterns
•take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
•compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best
Swimming and water safety
At present children will be taught to swim in Year 2 & 3 at Follifoot and Years 3 & 4 at Spofforth. They will attend once a week for a full term (approximately 12-14 weeks) during the academic year. If children are not confidently swimming 25m by the end of their second block provision will be made for them to attend a further block in either Year 4,5 or 6 in order to ensure every children can swim 25m when the leave primary school.
In particular, pupils are taught to:
•swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
•use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
•perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
Within The Federation PE is taught twice a week, children are provided with a wide range of sporting opportunities during lessons from the development of key skills to the application of these in a game situation. All teachers have high expectations of pupils and planning and teaching is differentiated in lessons to support pupils as individuals. Within The Federation a CPD model is followed to further improve professional knowledge and understanding and the quality of PE lessons. In this model staff work closely with specialist PE teachers and coaches to develop professionally in different sports. In each block teachers will spend some time observing, then team teaching and then teaching and receiving feedback. At present we work directly with ‘Sporting Influence’ (www.sportinginfluence.com) on this model.
We are a full member of the Harrogate Schools Sports Partnership. As well as entry into a wide range of competitions membership also provides specialist advice, support, training and equipment loan.
Sport and PE are a great opportunity to develop well rounded pupils through using the power of sport. With this in mind we aim for pupils to develop leadership, teamwork, communication and confidence skills.
Children have regular opportunities to participate in competitive sporting situations at different levels. These levels include:
- Competitive situations in class based lessons
- Inter ‘house’ team competitions
- Inter School competitions
- Harrogate School Sports Partnership competitions (competing against other Harrogate schools)
Because we are keen for pupils to experience sporting opportunities in their local environment we run trips to Harrogate climbing wall and use Rudding Park grounds) for Outdoor and Adventurous Activities alongside the residential trip to an outdoor centre on the East Coast (Year 5&6).
